Amigo de Bubo à frente da secreta guineense
BISSAU, Guinea Bissau - Guinea-Bissau says a navy officer with links to a suspected drug kingpin had been named head of the West African nation's information service.
The appointment of Biom Natchongo (capitão-de-mar-e-guerra) was announced in a statement Thursday by the Council of Ministers.
Natchongo is an associate of former navy chief Jose Americo Bubo Na Tchuto, who was arrested in April and transferred to New York on charges of conspiring to import narcotics into the U.S.
Natchongo has also served as a bodyguard to former President Joao Bernardo Vieira, who was assassinated in 2009.
Long a transit point for South American cocaine bound for Europe, Guinea-Bissau has been trapped in a cycle of instability since gaining independence from Portugal in 1974, with the most recent coup occurring in April 2012.
