Nigéria: Presidenciais em 14 de Fevereiro
December was a good month for Nigeria's opposition party, the All Progressives Congress. Its national convention avoided acrimony in choosing Muhammadu Buhari as its presidential candidate. And the appointment of Yemi Osinbajo, a Christian, balances the ticket.
Pressure grows meanwhile on the governing People's Democratic Party. Oil prices continue to fall. Boko Haram's murderous attacks continue. And the Economy Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has said that the 2015 budget will be the smallest in four years.
Elite loyalties are divided. Business people prefer the status quo. But others want change – fearing the economic effects of rampant corruption and the failure of state security in the north.
All this suggests one of Nigeria's closest ever elections.
